Touring the Loess Hills will be an educational blend of the past and present. See the 'catsteps' formed over 18,000 years ago by windblown soil called 'loess'. You will learn the geology and conservation practices used to preserve the hills. This unique landscape contains a rich collection of fossils and archeological artifacts. Extensive areas of the Loess Hills have remained in prairie and woodlands which contain a rich and rare mixture of native species. |

Follow the paths of the early pioneers as you travel in the Loess Hills with our Step-on Tour guide. Visit a historical village and view the tools used by the early pioneers who claimed land, wanting to till this fertile loess soil. View artifacts unique to this area, as well as a small prairie school or country church. Follow the paths of Lewis and Clark as they made their way up the Missouri River in 1804. On the shore of Blue Lake rests the Discovery, a full size replica of the actual keelboat used by Lewis & Clark. |

Winding through the hills, you will discover the Danish Ingemann Lutheran Church built 'in 1884. As you step inside the church building you will find it still in its original state. Our Step-On Guide will share with you stories of the early immigrants' history and tragedies. Enjoy a delicious ethnic meal served at one of the local churches. |
- Fall Foliage Tours - Come see the brilliant red sumac, rustic burr oak and golden maples as you go on a breathtaking ride through the unique Loess Hills. It is a real treat to visit the Apple Orchards in the fall. Be prepared to sample a warm apple pie at the Pie Parlor. Browse the sales barn filled with the aroma of fresh produce of many colors.

Each Spring the Loess Hills Hospitality Association sponsors Educational Tours for schools throughout Iowa.
These tours are in the unique Loess Hills of Western Iowa. The day includes a tour of the Loess Hills and hands-on educational experiences for 5th through 8th grade students.
A Loess Hills Step-On Guide will be with students the entire time, and there will be opportunities for field experiences, hiking, learning the geology of the Loess Hills, as well as enjoying a picnic lunch in Preparation Canyon State Park.
With the coming of the Lewis and Clark Expedition Bicentennial, beginning in 2004, these tours will be an excellent educational tool for students and teachers alike. Students will have an opportunity to visit Lewis & Clark State Park, near Onawa, and view the Discovery, a full size replica of the keelboat which Lewis and Clark used to navigate up the Missouri River. |
