Hiking Trails in Harrison County

  • Loess Hills Pioneer State Forest (9,700 acres) 206 Polk St. Pisgah nature center, visitor center, toilet, and picnicking.
  • DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge (7,823 acres) eight miles west of Missouri Valley on Highway 30, south on Desota Avenue. Picnicking, toilet, nature center, and historic site.
  • Willow Lake Recreation Area (222 acres) six miles northwest of Woodbine on Easton Trail (F20L). Camping, electricity, water, toilet, playground, nature center, historic site.
  • Schaben Park (77 acres) four miles south of Dunlap on Highway 30, two miles west on 141 LN. Camping, electricity, water, toilet, picnicking, playground, nature center
  • Sawmill Hollow Wildlife Area (155 acres) seven miles north of Missouri Valley on Highway 183, five miles east on Kennedy Avenue. Forest, prairie.
  • Vaile Wetland Nature Area ( 280 acres) three miles east of Modale on F 50, one mile north on Hamlin Avenue. Planted tall grass prairie, firebreaks.
  • Gleason-Hubel Wildlife Area (165 acres) one mile southeast of Little Sioux on Larpenteur Memorial Road. Forest, steep prairie ridge.
  • Murray Hill Scenic Overlook (three acres) two miles northeast of Little Sioux on Easton Trail (F20L). Overlooking view, historic site.

Hiking Trails in Monona County

  • Loess Hills Wildlife Area (3,896 acres) one mile west of Castana on L20, three miles north on Oak Avenue. Timber, prairie, good animal populations.
  • Preparation Canyon State Park (344 acres) four miles west of Moorhead on Highway 183. Eight hike- in campsites, steeped in local history, prairie and forest, picnicking, shelter, toilets, brochures at entrance.
  • Master's Prairie Trail (two-mile trail) one mile northwest of Mapleton, off of Highway 14. An abandoned railroad right of way planted to native short grasses and wildflowers.
  • Gray's Landing (43 acres) two miles northeast of Castana on Highway 175 along the Maple River. No trail but walking along the river possible.
  • Whiting Woods (80 acres) four miles southwest of Mapleton on Highway 175 and west on 140th Street and south on Peach Avenue. Picnicking, nature studies, shelter house, drinking water, and toilet.
